Schuss founder Elizabeth Lopeman started skiing at the age of two and alpine racing in Jackson Hole at the age of nine. Over the course of six years in Munich, she fell in love with traditional Bavarian sweaters. They warm body and soul in unfriendly weather, under shells and parkas on the slopes, and are a perfect outer layer for sunny, spring ski-days. Lopeman understood the comfort of lambswool on cold days, but also adored the way women of the Alps wear traditional sweaters to achieve a chic effect, while men dress them up or down with relaxed elegance. For apres-ski there’s nothing better looking anywhere.
Born of the snowy mountains and valleys of the Alps, traditional sweaters were popularized in the early 19th century during a surge in painting, literature, and architecture, and were worn for skiing, trekking, and working. Today, on the stormy slopes at Jackson Hole, Schuss sweaters are gorgeous testaments to the indispensable characteristics of wool and alpine style.
At Schuss we use first cut, non-mulesed merino lambswool, which means that the fibers are even softer than traditional merino yarns. The warmth, wicking properties, and breathability are uncompromising performance features of each sweater. Because wool has potent antimicrobial properties, it doesn’t collect odors or soil easily and can be worn continuously with little noticeable impact on the knitted fabric. Merino wool fibers are wonderfully fine and long, which makes the yarns soft to the touch and not itchy or scratchy.
As with the old-world treasures, Schuss sweaters are made with intense attention to detail and with the highest quality construction and materials. Unlike synthetics, when Schuss sweaters are properly cared for, they can have life spans of over one hundred years and be bequeathed to future generations. Wool is a natural fiber that is bio-degradable, retains its warming properties when wet, and can be relied upon for unparalleled comfort and performance.
